THE HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF PRODUCT DESIGN

The department offering four years university curriculum was started in 2001. The predecessor was the Department of Industrial Design offering the five years junior college curriculum in 1990 and renamed to the Department of Product Design in 1999. The purpose of this department is to educate students suitable for industries to use in designing the new products.

The department proposed a plan “Integrated curriculum on e-business incorporating product design and multi-medium system” and obtained the subsidy from the Ministry of Education for 8.28 million dollars to enhance the teaching facilities, such as RP (Rapid Prototyping), RE (Reverse Engineering), touching controlled design system and the Laser curving machine.

The department also proposed a plan “Improving the teaching Quality” and obtained the subsidy from the Ministry of Education for 2.5 million dollars to enhance the teaching qualities, such as providing the background music during practical hand-on working, providing excellent design products as teaching aids, etc.

The department has joined the “Trend Product Design Resource Center” hosted by National Chung Kung University and supported by the Ministry of Education since 2001. Our students can share the teaching resources, such as attending speeches and workshops instructed by international famous designers. Those activities can push the students’ view up to the international level.
